Easy Magnetic Window Treatment

May 29, 2015

Our last apartment had this tacky paper window covers. I couldn't stand them but I was only there for a year so I wasn't wasting the time or money on it.

Our new house has a ton of windows and once the Daylight Saving Time hit we were suddenly being blinded half to death if we were anywhere near the door windows.

What you need::
an iron
Heat and Bond Hem Tape
Enough fabric to cover the window
trim/tassel
round magnets

What I did::
I measured our the fabric to fit the window, just a bit short so a little light could stream through but be blocked by the tassel.

I left an inch for the hem on all sides except where I was putting the magnet, there I needed about 3 1/2 inches for the hem.

Next I ironed the hem before adding the Heat and Bond, this way I could just slip the hem tape in and iron it again. After creating the hem crease with the iron I ironed in the hem tape in small sections, I didn't want to get too big of a section and have an uneven hem.

You can see the hem in the next two pictures.

For the top hem with the magnet I ironed a hem crease again and then laid my magnets where I wanted them. I had a metal ironing board so they stuck to it and kept in place pretty well. I then worked in sections again, placing hem tape completely along the outer edge of the hem as well as pieces around the magnet to secure it in place.

I also ironed on some hem tape in the spaces between, not completely sealed, but enough to keep the fabric in place.

In case you're wondering I used 6 magnets to secure it.

To apply the tassel/trim I cut my hem tape in half, it was too wide otherwise, and worked in sections ironing the tassel to the bottom of the window blind.

Because the tassel seemed like a nylon type material I covered the section I was ironing with some scrap fabric to keep it from burning.

On the edges of the trim I used a little no fray seam sealant, but you could do the same very easily with more Heat and Bond Hem Tape.

Here's the second one I made. The first is from the living room and I'm keeping this one in the kitchen.

I really like the little pop of yellow against our blue green walls.

Super easy, in all I bought 3 yards of fabric and will get 3 window blinds out of it. I'm going to make another for the door going into the garage but leave off the trim.

I Heart Pinterest Wednesday

May 27, 2015

When we moved into our house my main love was the big kitchen. It has a great spacious layout.

However, it wasn't the original kitchen. This leaves us with an odd nook between the living room and kitchen. Many people have suggested putting the our farm house table there but there are two biggies in the way of that.

1. There is plenty of room in the kitchen for the table. Plus the kitchen is tile (easy kid food mess clean up) and the living room/nook is wood flooring (not so kid food friendly).

2. There are 3 rooms in the house, our room, baby room, guest room. That nook is the perfect space for an office area that we both really need without having a desk in a weird spot.

Recently Jeremy menioned finding a desk, we've been putting it off. Heck we've put everything except the nursery off since we moved in. So I started searching Pinterest, of course, to find office spaces that were styled with my beloved Ikea furniture.

Here's what I have in mind.

There are three walls in the nook, and one odd curve-ish corner. I think this would be a good idea for the smaller wall.

And this would be great for the other two walls.

I really like the Hemmes desk that matches a lot of the other furniture we bought on the last Ikea trip, but it would be too small for the space. I'm really wanting a built in look without paying for actual built-ins.

Here's another cute idea, but we'd need to add shelving to the space.

I really love this one, but I don't think we have enough space in the nook to do it justice.

Hopefully we fit the measurements for the first office I showed you and that fills the nook! One day when the house is done... a hundred years from now... I'll do a home tour.

Weekly Recap

May 26, 2015

This was supposed to go up Friday, but hopefully with school being out I can get back into a nice schedule (life included) over the summer.

I received both of the new Super Sizer mascara and Intensify me! eyeliner from Covergirl to test out the other day and I was surprised how much I like them. The mascara is nice, although the bush isn't my favorite bush on the market.

The eyeliner though...

Oh the eyeliner!

I've never actually bought liquid eyeliner because I couldn't apply it to save my life. This though, it comes in a pencil type applicator with a tip like a felt tip pen. Depending on how you hold it you can either have a thin line or thick. It stayed on really well (and with my watery allergy eyes that says a lot), but when I buy some of it myself I will be getting a lighter color.

I'm not a huge jet black fan.

One of my sweet kiddos sent me home with those flowers.

With school officially being out for us I can honestly say that year 6 of teaching was the best year so far. I almost hate to say it because it could easily be blamed on where I work, it's one of those country schools that doesn't have nearly the issues I've seen at the city schools I've taught in.

The term city being used very lightly because I'm not sure you can call Bastrop a city, but the school in town was a totally different ball game from the one I taught at on the outskirts of town there.

The kids this year were genuinely good people. They were kind and caring (98% of the time... they are still human) They actually gave me hope that the kids coming up in the world these days are still good.

So often you see kids in bad families not being taught well, and really not being treated well. You treat people the way you are treated, so it's hard to expect a child who is constantly beat and put down to be able to treat everyone better than what they see.

All I can say is that I hope to have many more years like this. Children who are eager to learn and supportive parents make it much more enjoyable to teach in the current crummy state of education in this state.

This little olive skinned baby is getting so big. Plus the men's style dress shirt onesies from Carter's are to die for.

I had a funny episode on the last student day.

As I was headed to the office to pump the power went out.

Now I could fill my battery pack and unplug, but considering it takes 8AA batteries and you can only use it 8 times before it loses suction I just assume hook up to a power outlet.

That being said I think I need a car adapter.

I'm in full on get back on track health wise around here.

However, pregnancy took a toll on me. I had to quit lifting weights at the end of my 7th month due to all the pain I was having... working out just make it worse. That two shorts months and then two more recovering from having the baby took down my yoga stamina big time.

Also the Whole30... we on are day 2 and my faux hunger is way worse then it was the last time I did one. Granted the last time I wasn't eating like this before hand. I also say faux hunger because there is no earthly way I'm hungry with all I'm eating, I'm just craving sweets like crazy.

I think that about sums up last week... maybe this Friday we can be on track with this week!

Meal Pinning Monday

May 25, 2015

Today officially starts Whole 30 in our house!

I did one about two years ago (before they allowed all the potatoes on earth) without Jeremy. This time around I've talked him into it thanks to the allowance of more than sweet potatoes. Whoop whoop!

[What is Meal Pinning Monday?]
MPM is how I meal plan for our little family. I once spent a lot of time searching the web and my recipe books hunting for new recipes and ideas for what to cook every week. Then, Pinterest came along and made meal planning much easier for me. Every weekend I look over what I have pinned the prior week and decide what I would like to cook and make my grocery list from these recipes. MPM came about as a way to share what I am cooking, and to also see what others are cooking every week to hopefully get even more dinner ideas from other bloggers. If you don't pin your recipes feel free to just share what you are cooking.

Monday - Bangers and Mash

Tuesday - Chicken Cacciatore

Wednesday - leftovers

Thursday - Grilled Chicken with Veggies and Roasted Potatoes

Friday - Cowboy Breakfast Skillet

Saturday - Grilled Ribeyes with Chimicurri (for me) and Oven Fries

Sunday - Paleo Mongolian Beef (with mushrooms and snow peas added & no sugar)

When Your Baby Belly Jiggles

May 20, 2015

Thoughts.

I don't think I've had a deep one in months.

I've also seen what pregnancy and a baby has done to my beloved blog. I use to have things to talk about, what happened?

Lack of time happened after I went back to work. Get home at 4, put the baby down who apparently knows I'll be home after he gets up at 2:30 and doesn't go back down. Feed at 5. Feed the big people after the little person at 5. Bath. Pack lunch and pump for the next day. Feed at 7:30. Rock baby half to death so we can go to bed by 8.

Wake up at 5:50 (not counting night feeds) and start over.

I really could use a nap. An 8 hour nap.

Don't think this is the only place I'm neglecting. I haven't been to the gym since January when I became too uncomfortable to even workout anymore. Once I was able to go back I haven't had the time. It just takes so much planning to be able to go, even when I wasn't at work I would have had to wait on Jeremy to get home... when it was time to cook dinner none the less.

This whole lack of Emily happening in my routine, and seeing those Baby Dedication pics (this was planned before but it is certainly an encourager) has me wanting to boot camp myself back into pre-pregnancy Emily.

That doesn't just mean weight. No way Jose.

Clean eating Emily took a long hike when super sick pregnancy Emily entered the scene.

So starting Friday I am going to do the Ultimate Yogi program that I so love and then on Monday we (Jeremy is participating) are doing a Whole 30.

Which might I add I haven't done in 2 years and the foods they've added to the mix made it much easier to convince my husband to participate in the Whole 30.

My goal with all of this in to get back into shape, see also breath and walk at the same time. As well as get my mind back into how we ate before, which was mainly paleo/primal a good 85% of the time.

I think I'm going to cry more doing the yoga than the Whole 30 though. The last time I tried doing Gentle Yoga when I was 20 weeks pregnant I couldn't finish the workout... this being the one workout I previously got so relaxed doing that I could have slept through.

So here's to my summer resolution of the yoga health freak Emily coming back into the picture.

I think I just may be sending Dad home with some junk food to help push me along.

See... I told y'all I haven't had a lucid thought in months. We started off at not being able to think and ended on food and yoga.

Baby Dedication

May 19, 2015

Mother's Day Baby Dedication service, let's just keep it at photos and no talking.
I didn't have any of the pics turn out well, so I think the next investment will be a tripod and a clicker.

a little bit of life

May 13, 2015

This was supposed to be a Five on Friday post, but that whole exhaustion and having a baby got in the way.

(Spell Check is a bust today, so don't judge the spelling errors... I typed fast)

I actually celebrated Mother's Day early when Jeremy got back from Colorado. I've been watchless for about a year and told him I could use a new one, I was mainly just hoping I could convince him to pop into the H&M that was close to their hotel.

Oh course, Jeremy being Jeremy upgraded me from my usual Target $15 watch. I'm not at all a present person, I really only tell him to get me things I need, so this was a huge surprise. I could tell time just fine on my cheap watch. He had to laugh at me for being impressed that I had a watch that the second timer worked and wasn't fake!

You've gotta love him. Granted every year won't be like this, I sure hope not at least. He said it was my push present/first Mother's Day gift. There's also been talk of that Satsuma tree I've been wanting. Eek!!

Little Dude seems to be trucking along as fat as ever. This week he decided to coo to get my attention while we were getting ready for work when he should have been asleep. When I walked over to see what he wanted he just grinned and kept talking. I sense a bit of a ham in our future... and a very on the go little boy.

I survived my first week back at work, even though it was state testing week. I also came back to stacks upon stacks of paperwork.

But I think I've gotten it under control. PTL!

Pumping in the cume folder closet at work has been interesting. Especially since it's the end of the year and teachers need their folders to complete paperwork. I suspect I will have pumped with half the staff by the time my year of nursing/pumping ends.

Thank the good Lord for Piko tops, they are built in nursing covers.

Last Friday we had a "free dress" day, which turned into a free dress day this week for our belated Teacher Appreciation Week (due to testing). From a truly 90's teen who started wearing uniforms in '97 I was in hog heaven.

I may or may not be sporting my Birkenstocks.

I also may or may not be dressing like I did in the '90s as well. But hey, shirts and Birkens are a perfectly cute way to dress. Keep in mind I'm far more crunchy an relaxed than a dressed up kinda gal.

Also, over my 2 month leave I only washed my hair every other day, this has led to being able to continue that. It took 2 months to get my hair to look on the 3rd day like it use to look the next day. Yay for more sleep!!

2 Month Update

May 6, 2015

This month we finally started seeing more of his personality, which appears to be along the lines of me as a baby ha!

::2 Months::
12 lbs 11 oz
22.5 inches long
40.8 cm head circumference

Clothing - some 0-3 month, but we are well into 3
Diapers size 1
Sleep - He is only waking up twice at night, but one week woke up 3 times every night. He sleeps great and rarely tries to stay awake after I feed him, however I have trouble sleeping when he starts his grunt and wiggle session at 4:30 when he has to poop.

He started rolling from tummy to back at 5 weeks and in the past two weeks we've seen a lot more smiles. We just may be on the verge of a giggle!

He likes to talk and will coo your head off. The child has things to say!
Harrison has even started furrowing his eyebrows at me and cooing in a way that sounds like grumbling, and I wouldn't be surprised at all if he was really complaining.

I don't think the kid is going to be a fan of being tickled, I did it the other day while he was really talkative and he got really quiet and stuck out his bottom lip in the saddest way possible.

Likes::
Baby Bjorn
Activity Mat
Cuddling
Talking to Mama
Eating (he smiles and coos almost the whole time)
Bath time

Dislikes::
Not a huge car seat fan

There aren't many things he just doesn't like, he has preferences that change daily. I think it's mainly just about catching what mood he is in

It's back to work for me, like it or leave it. Luckily my Dad is staying with us and it's only for 3 weeks before summer break. Gotta love good ole Daddy for offering to keep me sane incase I had to go back to work. So I'm going to hopefully be cooking stuff he likes for the next few weeks!

Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream

May 1, 2015

This is going to be the end of the ice cream recipes for a bit, there has been ice cream in our freezer for over a month straight.

Ain't no baby weight coming off if I keep this up!

The biggest thing about homemade ice cream for Jeremy is the texture. He wants easy to scoop and cream laden, I tend towards more of an ice milk preference.

That's how we made it to this recipe.

I thought the ice cream was creamy enough. He needed more.

I thought for sure the gelatin in marshmallows would get me that consistency, and it totally delivered!

Toasted Marshmallow Ice Cream

Ingredients::
2 cans sweetened condensed milk
1/2 cup sugar
2 tbsp vanilla extract
1/2 gallon 2% milk
1 quart heavy cream
10oz package of marshmallows

Directions::
In a large container combine sweetened condensed milk, sugar, vanilla, and 2% milk. Stir to combine. To toast marshmallows either do small batches in the toaster oven or larger under the broiler in a conventional oven. Once marshmallows are toasted (if using a toaster oven I did this in 4 batches) combine about 1/4 of the marshmallows with roughly a cup of cream in a blender. Pulse to combine, but do not over mix the cream or you will have whipped cream. I pulsed just enough to get a bit of stiffness. Add cream marshmallow mixture to the gallon container. Combine cream and toasted marshmallow in batches until both are used up and stir to combine with the milk base. Pour into an ice cream freezer and allow to churn 25-30 minutes if using a 2 quart or smaller size machine.

This recipe is for a 5 quart ice cream freezer, however I stored mine in a gallon pitcher and made about 4 smaller batches with it.
